The Castle of San Vittorino

The historic "Castrum S.Victorini" castle dates back to 1163, as
attested to by one of the edicts in which the emperor Frederick
Barbarossa gave a series of endowments to the Municipality of Gubbio.
The "Palatium", a massive stone construction, ennobled by a round
tower, rises up on a hill in a location most likely chosen for its
strategic view over the roads leading to the city.

The hill and the fortified building are part of the defensive
structure.
The courtyard from which it rises up, together with the church
(photo below) and its prebend, make up a unique and austere
architectural work that most likely served as a resting place for
pilgrims who travelled along the “Via Francescana” road that continued
on towards the Vallingegno Abbey, San Pietro in Vigneto and Assisi..

Today, the completely restored castle also serves as the residence of
the owners of the property. It is located in the heart of a 32-hectare
organic farm amidst forests, oaks, pines and olive trees, just 5
Km from Gubbio.
